<p>Which is it for you? Are you following a path or are you rambling? Marcus Annaeus Seneca really gave us a stark difference between.  Is there an end to your path?  Is it taking you to a worthwhile goal? Or, are you just embarked on interminable rambling?</p>
<p>Since you&#8217;re reading this, the odds are that you are on a path to a goal. People interminably rambling seldom bump into a blog site about achieving goals!</p>
<p>Marcus Annaeus Seneca lived around 54 BC to about 39 AD. But, he knew the importance of goals and he described it pretty bluntly. If you have an end in mind, a goal, you will choose a path that takes you, as directly as possible, to that goal.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t have a goal you will tend to wander. You don&#8217;t have a path to follow, so what else can you do.  If you happen to be on a path that someone has followed before you, you might stay there for a while. But, the odds are you&#8217;re doing it because someone else has gotten all the debris out of the way, not because you know where the path is going.  It&#8217;s just easier!</p>
<p>But look at the description of rambling&#8230;interminable! There&#8217;s no end! It just goes pointlessly on!</p>
<p>The great thing is that you get to make a choice. Choose an end and follow a path to it. Then, choose another&#8230;otherwise you&#8217;ll just be rambling from a different starting point, and it&#8217;ll still be interminable!</p>
<p>Go for the goal!</p>

<p>I read that quotation yesterday in a friend&#8217;s newsletter and had to share it with my readers!  What an important distinction this is.  We always hear about the importance of knowing who we are and what our values are as we establish our goals.  That&#8217;s what this quotation is about.</p>
<p>We do set goals for our future, that&#8217;s how we make our future become what we want it to be.  But, our goals must be consistent with our values.  If you try to establish a goal that is inconsistent with your values, you will find it almost impossible to achieve.  Why?  Because to achieve it you have to work against your values.  This doesn&#8217;t work.  We&#8217;re back to the Biblical reminder that no man can serve two masters.</p>
<p>Goals come and go.  We set a goal, work to achieve it, then set another.  That&#8217;s how they&#8217;re supposed to work.  That&#8217;s not how values work.  Our values are pretty much constant.  We have them now, and they guide our goals and actions.  That&#8217;s how we live our values.  If we are true to ourselves, our goals will take us to a future that still holds those values.</p>
<p>So, when you are envisioning your future seeing it with the results that come from achieving the goals you&#8217;re currently pursuing, that vision must be consistent with your values.  You can count on your values to guide you.</p>
