I wrote an article a couple of months ago asking what age is too old to set goals. Then, this past Father’s Day I wrote a post here about my dad and how I had learned from him to never quit, never give up. My sister read that post to my mother, and she liked it. Now, two weeks after my mother has gone to join my dad in heaven, I’ll give an object lesson from her too.

As the title says, my mother was 93 years old. That is definitely an age where many people might think that you no longer set goals. They would be wrong!
The Saturday before this past Easter my mother was getting ready to go outside to move her car. The apartment complex needed to plow snow from the parking lot. As Mom related it to me, she sat too close to the edge of her chair as she reached to put her snow boots on and fell off the chair.
Mom broke her left arm, actually the ball in the shoulder socket. On Easter Sunday the doctors put a new one in. Mom needed to go through physical therapy, starting in a nursing home. She had no appetite and wasn’t eating. Obviously, she was losing strength and her spirits were down.
My brother, my two sisters, and I all encouraged Mom to eat to get strength so she could do her therapy. She knew she needed to and that she wouldn’t get better unless she did. But, food just didn’t appeal to her.
After a couple of days, she decided that we were right. Mom told my sister that she was going to force herself to eat whether she wanted to or not. She was going to do the physical therapy she needed so her arm would heal and she could get back to her normal life.
Think about that. At the age of 93, my mother set a goal…she would do the therapy and get her life back.
Do you know what? She did!
After a couple of weeks in the nursing home, Mom went to stay with one of my sisters for two months as she did therapy, healed, and got back to the point where she could take care of herself in her apartment.
She set her goal and did whatever it would take (including eating when there was no appetite), and she achieved her goal. She moved back into her home on June 14. She had her independence back!
If you’ve read my free report, “6 Letters to Launch Your Goals: CHANGE,” you’ll notice that my mother automatically followed the principles that I outlined! If you haven’t read the report yet, you can get it by taking the link at the bottom of this post!
Mom went to heaven on June 24, after falling ill the previous Saturday. She is missed by all of her family and friends, but she left us with one final lesson. No matter how old you are, you can respond to the challenge and achieve your goal!
