Friedrich Nietzsche said “Many are stubborn in pursuit of the path they have chosen, few in pursuit of the goal.”

Are You in Stubborn Goal Pursuit??

Every once in a while we need to stop and examine what we’re doing. Are we stubbornly pursuing the path we have chosen, or are we truly pursuing the goal we have set for ourselves? There can be a big difference. One will help us reach our dreams; the other might not.

When we choose a goal, we also set a plan that will take us to it. That’s a key part of this whole process. But part of the plan we set should include careful examination of our progress. Things change!

Let’s say that you set a goal ten years ago to retire in thirty years. (I’m assuming that you’re much younger than I am!) So, you chose a good financial advisor who helped you plan a course to achieve that goal. Your advisor understood investing, markets, tax law, and all the other things that need to be understood to plan for your retirement in thirty years.

And, you have been faithfully following that plan. Good for you! In fact, a couple of years ago your financial advisor moved to a different state, and you found a new one. That’s good. You need to have good advice in these trying financial times.

But, about six months after you started working with the new advisor, he told you that you should alter your plan a bit. New laws have been passed and some of the investment markets that you chose ten years ago are not such hot markets today. Your new advisor is giving you advice to keep you on track to retire in what is now twenty years.

What do you do? What if you chose to ignore the new advice because you were committed to following your plan. It was a good plan from a very knowledgeable advisor, and you are a very disciplined person…you always follow through!

Are you following through on your plan or your goal? You have new, updated information that the plan needs to be changed if you want reach your goal. What are you going to do?

What did Nietzsche say again? “Many are stubborn in pursuit of the path they have chosen, few in pursuit of the goal.” This is a good reminder that we not only need to follow our plan, we need to keep our plan current to ensure that it takes us successfully to our goal. After all, that’s why we set the plan in the first place!
